How Technology Reconnected Families with School Life at Academy

Rebuilding Connection in a Post-Pandemic World
The pandemic disrupted more than just learning—it deeply fractured the vital bond between families and schools. At Guilford Preparatory Academy, a K–8 Title 1 public charter school in Greensboro, North Carolina, this reality hit home. Families already facing barriers like limited access to technology and educational resources suddenly became even more isolated from their children’s learning environments. But this community wasn’t going to let that disconnection define them. Instead, they turned to technology as a bridge, creating a powerful blueprint for rebuilding engagement.

A Vision Born from Listening
As the school’s technology teacher, director of technology, and PTA liaison, one educator found herself uniquely positioned at the intersection of need and innovation. By listening to families and teachers, she understood the emotional and practical gaps the pandemic left behind. The big question became: How do we make schools feel like home again for families—and how can tech be the key?

The answer came in the form of Jaguar Jam, an event designed not just as a celebration but as a strategic engagement tool to bring families back into the fabric of school life.

Jaguar Jam: A Celebration Powered by Tech
Launched in spring 2023 under the leadership of PTA President Shanita Swann, Jaguar Jam quickly became a cornerstone event. It was envisioned to lift the spirits of both families and educators while rebuilding trust and connection. But more than anything, it showed how technology can humanize school culture.

On the day of the event, the school transformed into an experience. Classrooms, halls, and outdoor areas became vibrant activity zones where students and families could create, learn, and connect. Digital platforms enabled real-time communication, sign-ups, gratitude posts, and reminders—ensuring every family, even those at home, could be a part of the magic.

Technology as a Tool for Empowerment
Technology didn’t just support the logistics—it became the heartbeat of the event. In the gym, student-led vendor tables stole the spotlight. From phone cases designed in digital labs to cotton candy sales tracked with budgeting apps, students proudly shared their work while families beamed with pride.

Meanwhile, the “Ready, Tech, Go” session gave away free laptops to 25 families and provided hands-on coaching in using school platforms, checking grades, and supporting digital learning at home. These moments didn’t just teach skills—they built confidence.

Real Change Beyond the Event
Perhaps the most powerful scenes unfolded in the technology classroom, where a resume workshop helped parents build digital profiles and apply for jobs. For some, this marked a turning point. Six parents secured full-time employment following the event, with one woman landing the highest-paying job of her life—despite believing past mistakes would hold her back forever.

Unity Through Participation
What made Jaguar Jam truly transformative was the unity behind it. Teachers didn’t just supervise—they participated as fellow community members. School board members attended in support, and parents felt seen, heard, and included. The event wasn’t about meeting quotas; it was about restoring dignity and relationship to every family.

Conclusion: Technology as a Promise of Belonging
Jaguar Jam stands as a model of what’s possible when schools embrace technology not as a cold tool, but as a warm invitation. For Title 1 schools and others seeking stronger family bonds, the message is clear: Family engagement isn’t a program—it’s a promise. Technology is how we keep that promise, showing respect and creating access for every parent, guardian, and caregiver.

When schools use tech to bring families in—not push them out—the result isn’t just academic success. It’s transformation.
